FCC Eyes AT&T Jobs – Charlie's "Media Empire" – Liao Out at CableLabs

Battlegrounds:  "Show us the jobs," is the FCC's message to AT&T as wireless communication bureau chief Rick Kaplan asks for some specifics on those up to 96K jobs promised as part of the proposed T-Mobile merger.  Meanwhile, U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle is battling through a blizzard of filings on the 'yeas' and 'nays' of the deal.  More from National Journal. --- “The spectrum that we’ve got is really the filet mignon of video delivery," LIN TV's Vincent Sadusky bragged to investors.  And not only does LIN plan to hold on to that spectrum, the company could be looking at buying more via local station purchases.  "The potential for industry consolidation is greater than ever," Sadusky said.  More from MediaPost.

Strategies:  The improving-every-issue Bloomberg Businessweek says Charlie Ergen is creating a "media empire based on delivery of video and data" in "A Deeper Dish Network" here.  Though the article revolves around the failed Dish bid for Hulu, the article gets it right about what Dish (and Echostar) are attempting to create ... an ubiquitous broadband service that is a hybrid satellite/terrestrial wireless service.  A Hulu acquisition would have provided significantly more video rights ... something "non-voting" Hulu backer Comcast might not have liked. - PSM

Folks: CableLabs CEO Dr. Paul Liao told his board he would not renew his contract, which expires at the end of the year, for personal reasons.  The Exec Cte has launched a search for a successor.  Liao joined the organization in 2010.

Never Mind:  Hulu won't sell after all.  The owners say they've discovered its "unique and strategic value."

Technology:  Hot on the heels of reports dissing the studio's UltraViolet cloud storage service ("partially baked," said BTIG's Richard Greenfield), Apple is reportedly preparing to offer its own movie access service.  More from SNL Kagan.

Retrans:  As noted earlier this week, the (well, one of the) next big retrans fight looks likely to pit DIRECTV v. Belo with a Nov. 1 deadline on the contract for 20 local stations.
